Curtis is a native of Yarrawonga, Victoria, Australia the daughter of Carmencita Ojales a Filipina from Bolinao Pangasinan and James Ernest Curtis-Smith, an Australian lawyer. Her father, James Ernest Curtis-Smith, married Ojales in 1982. The younger brother Jasmine has also become an actress. Clare is a cousin of theirs on the day of father's death. Clare passed away at 4 months of age in 2007 after suffering from an illness of the heart.
